Viðareiði is the northernmost town in the Faroe Islands and is located on the island of Viðoy. The lighting here is fantastic and if you are not afraid of the weather, you will get your money's worth as a photographer.
From its coast you can see the northern capes of the islands of Borðoy and Kunoy. To the east are the islands of Fugloy and Svinoy, which can be reached by public supply ship, the Ritan, from the town of Hvannasund on Viðoy.
However, this is not a tourist ship and it only sails when necessary. We are lucky because a local passenger comes along who wants to go to Fugloy and so the Ritan sets off with us on a three-hour "cruise" between the three islands despite the changeable weather and sometimes stormy sea.
We pass high cliffs, which we photograph as long as the rain and sleet showers don't occasionally force us to go to the rooms below deck. The trip is great and authentic, not a tourist stunt - you can see that from the price of the ticket...
On Svinoy we take craftsmen on board, whose equipment is hoisted on board in large plastic containers. They drive back with us to Hannasund, where our car is also parked. Since we are traveling electrically with our Mustang Mach-E, we are among those on the Faroe Islands who can still drive, since a strike that has now lasted three weeks has also paralyzed the gas stations.
On the roads you occasionally see cars that have broken down because they have run out of fuel.
