The Kuril Islands chain (Russian: Курильские острова; Japanese: 千島列島, Chishima-rettō, German "Archipelago of a Thousand Islands") consists of about 30 islands and connects Kamchatka in Russia with Hokkaido in Japan.

Officially, the islands belong to Russia, but this is territorially disputed.

We took this photo from the town of Rausu in Hokkaido, Japan. From here you can take boats across to the nearby Kurile island of Kunashir, which has been occupied by Russia since World War II but claimed by Japan as part of Nemuro Sub-Prefecture, Hokkaidō.

The emerging fog takes over the island bit by bit and gives the photo an almost mystical appearance,
